Maybe the old adage is true; there is a first time for everything.

ESPN
is reporting that the major league baseball players association and the owners have agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement two months before the current agreement is set to expire.  That is news not because of any earth shattering clauses in the agreement but because this marks the FIRST TIME IN THE THIRTY PLUS YEARS since the players won the right to organize that the current agreement will be succeeded by a new one without a work stoppage.  The previous nine agreements all ended up with a player strike or an owner lockout of the players before a new contract was reached, and the last time the agreement was up for renewal, in 2002, the bargaining back and forth went to literally the 11th hour threatening another work stoppage that was just barely avoided.

Maybe the players and owners have finally learned their lesson from the devastating 1994 strike that cancelled the World Series and alienated fans so much their still is a bitter taste in people's mouths.
